I am Maxine Budhu, an empathetic leadership coach who focuses on supporting high-performing professionals in Corporate America thrive in their careers by standing out with empathetic leadership. Before you lose hope! Empathy is real and it is the most profound (and noticeable) trait to emphasize the way that you lead yourself and others. When supported by healthy self-awareness, strong communication skills, strength-based feedback, empowerment and accountability, empathetic leadership makes outstanding impacts and makes you stand out where it counts.
I am a Certified Internal Auditor and have worked in Corporate for over 20 years, moving from internal auditing, risk management, and now, compliance. I am a wife and mother of 2 beautiful boys, 7 and 14 years-old. Re-entering Corporate America after parental leave was never easy, I developed a very strong sense of empathy for working parents who have played both roles in parenting and working full-time outside of the home. Upon returning to work after just 12 weeks of parental leave, I was beyond surprised with the massive shift it took for me to get back into working. I felt like a different person. Between shuffling through the women's department clothing racks for clothes that fit my new size and the tears shed for having to leave my new baby after only 12 weeks, I felt like a train wreck that was wrapped in beautiful flowered wallpaper, attempting to hide the new (uncomfortable) me. And, I wasn't the only one who noticed this new me-one of my male co-workers actually casually suggested that I should work out on the treadmill while watching tv to get back into shape. YES, true story! At that time, between pumping and countless sleepless nights, I was too tired to respond with any wit. Other pivotal life experiences that occurred around the first few months of motherhood, while I worked full-time and still (being the professional I am) required to show up and perform well at work, would lead me to understand the importance of empathy in the workplace.
When I began to approach everything I did and said with empathy, I noticed a shift in how others responded to me, they were blatantly kind! My empathetic leadership struck a nerve in my leadership team, got me noticed and led to very positive results-multiple promotions at one organization, and countless opportunities to take on more strategic responsibilities.
